Body Mass Index…Pros & Cons

Cause for this article was the calculation of my own BMI last year. I was in the overweight category and on the other hand I had low body fat percentage.

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.The body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet index is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres.in

However, athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.

In general, a person who has a high BMI is likely to have body fatness and would be considered to be overweight or obese, but this may not apply to athletes. A trained healthcare provider should perform appropriate health assessments in order to evaluate an individual’s health status and risks.
