All about warts

Warts are benign growths (hyperplasias) of the skin which are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus-HPV.

Although warts constitute a benign condition, they may be a cause for concern to patients as they can cause pain, they may bleed or even hamper walking, if their site of localization is on the feet.

Warts are the second most common skin disease following acne. Children and young people are being affected by warts more often, due to the immature immune system of these individuals, although their occurrence at any age cannot be excluded, especially on the hands, feet and face.

The transmission of warts is being performed by simple contact with contaminated people or objects.

There are varius treatments such as:

  • Laser Treatment – The most effective method
  • Cryotherapy
  • Diathermy Coagulation
  • Surgical excision

As the virus is highly contagious, compliance with these specific rules is necessary for prevention:

  • Frequent hand washing
  • Avoid walking around swimming pools and on sand with bare feet
  • Contaminated individuals should avoid using public swimming pools until cure is achieved
  • Use of personal towels and object
