What are the Chakras

The Chakras are energy vortices which are created in ourselves after they have been penetrated into our physical body. They are converted in simply words at activity centers for the reception, the assimilation and the transmission of vital energies. Our self is evolved, changes and interacts with the world through the chakras.

The word ‘chakra’ is derived from the sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’. Literally translated from the Hindi it means ‘Wheel of spinning Energy’. There are seven main chakras along the spine, which start at the bottom of the spine and reach the top of the head. These seven chakras correspond to main ganglia, in various bodily functions such as breathing, digestion, in having children, in endocrine glands. While chakras exist in the physical body, they are not made of natural ingredients.

In the psychological world where (the mental, emotional and spiritual world are included), the chakras correspond to important areas of our lives such as sex, love, communication, understanding, strength. Philosophically, the chakras correspond to basic archetypal concepts, such as the elements of earth, fire, air, sound, thought and light. These data describe the vital nature of the function of the specific chakra, like the fire which is transformed, the earth which contains flowing water. The sounds, the colors, the gems, the herbs which can be used as tools for the penetration and the development of chakras, are also correlated with the chakras.

There are also other smaller chakras, such as those in the hands and our feet. These as well as the others are operation centers but they are not been attributable to the wider philosophical premises. It is quite possible that someone who practices a manual labor has well developed chakras in the hands, or a runner has developed chakras in the feet.

In the level of a personal development, the chakras correspond to progress from infancy to early adulthood, which is repeated from adulthood to old age as we draft survival strategies, we communicate, learn, visualize, we evolve our personal power, we develop sexual relationships. Understanding the significance of these levels, we can better develop the appropriate strategies to face the social or the personal situations.

Sometimes the chakras  are referred as water lilies because they open and close like a flower, while in the tantric system they are presented with a number of petals varies. The petals are representative of each of the chakras vibrational rate. The number of the chakras of the base ranges from four to a thousand, while the chakra of the peak exceeds a thousand.

When a chakra becomes blocked the vital energy can not travel through this part of the body. If this happens, we feel it as a deficiency in our lives in the related field (ex. the lack of communication-fifth chakra).  There may also be an overloaded chakra if it is out of balance in relation with the other chakras of the system. In this case this chakra consumes so much physical energy and dedication of the mind so it brings an inadequacy in the other areas. For example, an overloaded third chakra brings the need for power and control over the other. It prevents the ability of finding love and balance which are associated with the heart chakra, which is located directly above.

We can control and influence our chakras by commitment and understanding. They can be grown such as muscles or they can be brought up as a seed. Their development was initially accomplished through the understanding of the system as something intact and then through the exercise on specific areas. Part of the techniques may be the physical exercises, the visualization, the mantras, the meditation, the herbs, the precious stones which are correspond to chakras, the treatment of old injuries and general teachings which the every- day life offers  us.

Considering that the body is a vehicle, the chakras can be interpreted as the “rudders of the life”. They carry this vehicle through the evolutionary journey toward the enlightenment. These “rudders” which are inside us, act like speeds, each of them is suitable for different stages or activities of life. The more we open our chakras, the more alive and conscientious we become.
